Remedy
Significant resources have been invested to characterize and understand the impacts of past industrial operations. Environmental investigations began on the property in 1992 and led to the discovery of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) impacting soil and groundwater. Results from site investigations indicate that there are no unacceptable health or safety concerns related to those impacts. Wyeth is performing this voluntary cleanup under Chapter 62-780 Florida Administrative Code (FAC) with the oversight of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
Current Activities
Active remediation has been completed. Work has transitioned into natural attenuation monitoring, which examines long term changes to groundwater on and surrounding the Site. Wyeth continues to sample and analyze groundwater within a Temporary Point of Compliance (TPOC) groundwater monitoring well network surrounding the Site to ensure compliance with remediation objectives.
This sampling program may, from time to time, include installation of additional groundwater monitoring well locations within the surrounding neighborhood to ensure a thorough evaluation of groundwater conditions and the effectiveness of the remedy. Logistics and permitting associated with installation of these wells has been coordinated with FDEP, the Florida Department of Health, Volusia County, and the City of DeLand.
Completed Activities
Active remediation of the source area was completed in 2017. Active remediation included soil mixing with large diameter augers combined with injection of steam and zero-valent iron. Post-remediation performance monitoring, completed in 2018, confirmed that the active remediation met its goals.
Remedial Action Plan
Based on extensive site investigations a remedial action plan was submitted to FDEP in March 2016 proposing a final remedy for addressing groundwater impacts. FDEP issued an Order approving the remedial action plan on August 30, 2016.

The remedial action plan combines aggressive active remediation of the source area, along with natural attenuation and groundwater monitoring to ensure remediation goals are achieved. The remedial action plan includes:
Completed Activities
- Mixing of soil deep within the ground using a large auger, and heating the soil by adding hot air and steam;
- Collecting VOCs using a closed vacuum system and treating the vapors using granular activate carbon;
- Adding a slurry mixture following the thermal treatment to address remnant VOCs;
Ongoing Activities:
- Post active remediation monitoring of the natural attenuation, or breakdown, of remaining VOC impacts;
- Sampling and analysis of groundwater within a TPOC network surrounding the Site Property to ensure compliance with remediation objectives.
